Mumbai News: St Xavier’s College in south Mumbai has received multiple complaints from students against a guest speaker who was invited for a national seminar earlier this week. The institution confirmed that the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) is now examining the allegations after at least ten students submitted written complaints on Friday.
Students told the ICC that the speaker, who had been staying on the campus during his visit, took photographs of female students without permission. They also alleged that he brushed past them in an improper manner. The incidents were said to have taken place on Monday.
Once the concerns reached the college administration, the speaker was asked to leave the premises on the same day, though he was scheduled to address a session the following day. The college has also informed his parent university about the matter.
The Times Of India report cited Principal Karuna Gokarn as stating that, the college acted immediately after a preliminary inquiry. She stated that the institution maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment and assured full support to the affected students. She added that the ICC’s findings will be shared with the speaker’s university.
The college has communicated the incident to Azad Maidan police. While the police have been alerted, an FIR has not yet been registered. The administration has also decided to tighten background checks for all guest speakers at future events.

In separate news, a minor girl has lodged a police complaint against her mother and a neighbor in Ghatkopar area of Mumbai, accusing them of forcing her into prostitution. The victim, a tenth-grade student, revealed her harrowing experience to her schoolteacher, stating that her mother and the neighbor had been coercing her for months to engage in this exploitative activity.
Desperate to escape, she confided in a friend and later approached her teacher, who promptly alerted school authorities. In response to the girl's account, the police have charged both the mother and neighbor under multiple sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. This case underscores the complexities of legal frameworks around prostitution in India, as activities related to coercion and exploitation are criminalized. A thorough investigation is currently underway.
