Mumbai Pod Taxi: The urban mobility in India is getting modernised day by day with technological advancements. In one such move, Mira Bhayandar in Mumbai suburbs is set to get a pod taxi service in the coming years, as per a report by Pune Pulse.

The futuristic mobility initiative is one step ahead of the metro service. It will operate on an elevated corridor and be separate from regular road traffic.

What is a pod taxi?

A pod taxi is a driverless and small taxi-like service with a key difference of running on an elevated corridor. Since it runs separately from the traffic, it reduces congestion and provides safer, faster travel. Each pod can carry 4-8 passengers based on its capacity.

Progress so far

Maharashtra State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnik said that the advanced transportation system is being planned with collaboration from Neutron EV.

The tech firm has already begun the survey of the route in Mira Bhayandar. The survey was conducted in April and a detailed report was presented under Sarnik's leadership.

When operationalised, Mira Bhayandar will become the second city in India to have a pod taxi service after Vadodara in Gujarat. The service will be crucial for the city, which is seeing a rapid rise in its population and therefore a demand for faster, smoother, safer and eco-friendly travel.

Details of project

Sarnik said that the groundbreaking ceremony is expected by the end of this year. According to reports, the first phase of the project will connect JP Infra to Golden Nest, a 14-km stretch.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1,000 crore. But since the project will be developed under the PPP model, the financial burden will not lie with either the state government or the municipal corporation. After the survey and necessary approvals, the construction is likely to start by March next year.
