Mumbai Water Metro Update: Maharashtra Ports Minister Nitesh Rane on Saturday stated that Mumbai is exploring the possibilities of building water metro in the city to boost connectivity and the tourism. Rane stated that the idea behind the project is to utilise the water resources of the city to reduce traffic congestion, adding that the metro system will be inspired by the Kochi Water Metro. He further assured that a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared and is expected to be submitted by the end of this month.
While providing details, Rane further stated that a special purpose vehicle (SPV) will be formed in collaboration with the central government, adding that the partnership in the project will be based on a 50:50 equity share. Rane state that the capital city of Maharashtra has never utilised its water resources, adding that the ambitious project will reduce traffic congestion from key regions and will provide a boost to the financial activities.
"The water metro project will improve urban transportation and boost tourism in the country's financial capital," Rane was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. He stated that the project will include battery-powered ferries and will connect several regions of the city. He also confirmed that Kochi's water metro is also assisting the Maharashtra government to prepare the roadmap.
He stated that the ambitious project will reduce traffic congestion from several key areas of MMR, including Narangi-Kharwadeswari, Vasai-Mira Bhayander, and Vashi-Domestic Cruise Terminal. Rane further stated that the water metro will have a total of 21 stations along the Vaitarna River, Vasai, Thane.
State Ports Minister Rane further stated that the ambitious project will be completed in two phases- introduction of the water metro and featuring a roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) services. The project is a part of the attempt of the state government to boost the transportation of the capital city.
