Mumbai Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that Mumbai is ‘very likely’ to experience light rain or thunderstorms on Tuesday and Wednesday, as the city faces soaring temperatures. However, these conditions are not expected to provide significant relief from the heat.
The Hindustan Times report cited Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD, as explaining, “There is a cyclonic circulation in the lower troposphere over Marathwada and surrounding areas.” This weather pattern suggests that while Mumbai may receive light rains, nearby areas like Thane are likely to experience more intense rainfall.
Mumbai Rain Today: Yellow Alert Issued For Thane And Raigad
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Thane and Raigad, signalling the possibility of light to moderate rain accompanied by gusty winds of 30-40 kilometres per hour. Additionally, Nashik may witness hailstorms during this period.

If rain occurs, it will be classified as pre-monsoon rainfall. Nair clarified, “Any shower between March 1 and May 31 is considered part of the pre-monsoon period.”
On Monday, the Santacruz weather observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24 degrees Celsius, which is 1.2 degrees Celsius above the normal range. Meanwhile, Colaba observed a maximum of 32.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.2 degrees Celsius, also 1.2 degrees Celsius above normal.
Despite the forecasted showers, little change in overall temperatures is expected, remaining between 32 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius. However, the humidity may cause minimum temperatures to rise to around 25 degrees Celsius.

Weather Trough Extending From Chhattisgarh To Tamil Nadu
The expected rain is linked to a weather trough extending from south Chhattisgarh to north interior Tamil Nadu. This trough allows northeasterly winds to flow at an altitude of 0.9 km above sea level, impacting parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Unseasonal Rainfall In Mumbai Not Unusual During March-April
Nair noted that unseasonal rain during March and April is not unusual for Mumbai. Such pre-monsoon showers are common due to varying wind patterns. Historical data shows that significant rainfall has occurred during these months in previous years, including 17.1 mm on March 21, 2023.
