A man who had fallen into the sea from a private yacht off the Mumbai coast was rescued by an Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship on Saturday night. An ICG official stated that the ICG ship C439 responded to the distress call quickly and conducted a swift operation in the dark hours. The rescue operation lasted about three hours and the man was rescued safely.

The private yacht from which the man had fallen was identified as McGregor 6. The ICG official added that the rescued person was stable and healthy.

"The Indian Coast Guard Ship saved a precious life in the dark hours. In a swift operation conducted in the night of February 3, 24, ICG ship C439 saved a man, who had fallen into the sea off Mumbai from private Yatch McGregor 6. ICG ship responded to the call quickly. The rescue operation lasted three hours," the ICG official said as quoted by news agency ANI.

The Indian Coast Guard is responsible for enforcing maritime law, combating smuggling, protecting offshore assets and preventing marine pollution. It has performed 3,899 search and rescue missions, 8,012 sorties and 453 medical evacuations at sea till December 31, 2023.

The ICG has saved over 10,000 lives since 1977, as it celebrated its 48th Raising Day on February 1, reported Times of India. The ICG also seized contraband worth Rs 15,343 crore in anti-smuggling and narcotics operations at sea. It has 158 ships, 78 planes and 13,954 personnel in its fleet.
