Navi Mumbai International Airport Update: The opening of the much-awaited Navi Mumbai Airport is postponed by the authorities as the airport lacks readiness. The delay was confirmed after the Airport Authority of India (AAI) issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen).
NOTAM is a formal alert system in the aviation industry that is used to notify of major changes, hazards that affect flight operations. The concerned NOTAM was issued, indicating the runway and emergency services at the upcoming airport were non-operational.
The NOTAM is valid until August 6. After this, a new NOTAM will be issued as per the conditions at that time.
The Navi Mumbai Airport is being developed as a game-changer for Mumbai and the suburbs, including neighbouring districts like Thane and Raigad, among others.
The Navi Mumbai Airport would significantly contribute to easing burgeoning passenger traffic at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai.
The airport was initially slated for May 15 but got delayed. Earlier reports suggested that the work on the airport was in the final stage. Reportedly, all airside construction work was completed, and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) was in the process of getting regulatory approvals.
The construction work of terminal buildings and landside access was underway. More recently, the airport was undergoing Operation Readiness and Transfer (ORAT) testing to ensure a smooth start. Meanwhile many airlines have already applied for landing and take-off slots, with the DGCA set to finalise these allocations soon.
The airport, which is being developed in phases, is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually in its first phase, with a future capacity of 90 million passengers and 3.2 million tonnes of freight per year. The initial phase will include a Code F-compliant runway, parallel taxiways, one passenger terminal (T1), freight terminals and supporting infrastructure.
