Talks between the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar, to contest the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections together failed on Friday. According to a report by Jagran.com, Ajit Pawar and his uncle Sharad Pawar could not agree on seat sharing formula, following which the Sharad Pawar faction turned back to the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
The report, cited sources saying that a meeting between two leaders was held around noon in Pune. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP offered only 35 seats to NCP-SCP, using the 'clock' symbol.
The Sharad Pawar faction rejected the offer outright and walked out of the meeting. Following this, the Sharad Pawar faction began intense discussions with Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Congress.
An MVA meeting was then held at a hotel in Pue which was attended by Bapusaheb Pathare and Ankush Kakade from the Sharad Pawar faction, Arvind Shinde and Ramesh Bagwe from the Congress and Vasant More from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction).
The ruling Mahayuti alliance, on the other hand, is also locked in a seat-sharing standoff. The Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and the BJP have not reached an agreement on 20 seats. Shiv Sena had demanded 35 seats to contest the polls but the BJP has confirmed only 15 seats.
Shiv Sena workers and leaders on Friday protested outside their senior leader Neelam Gorhe’s house here to oppose the BJP’s offer of 15 seats for the polls scheduled for January 15.
She said the BJP initially offered 12 seats, but after party leaders followed up with Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, who heads the Shiv Sena, and Industries Minister Uday Samant, the offer was revised to 15 seats.
Elections for the 165 seats of the Pune Municipal Corporation are scheduled for January 15, which has created a political frenzy. This failure could create new political dynamics in Maharashtra.
