Pune Pubs News: A recent Right to Information (RTI) query has shed light on Pune's nightlife scene. The query, filed by Advocate Sameer Shaikh, has uncovered that a mere 23 pubs and discotheques in the city are officially authorised to operate.
According to the information provided, a discotheque license is a legal requirement for any establishment with a designated dance floor or area. These licensed venues are permitted to operate from 11:30 am to 1:30 am, provided they comply with all relevant laws, including noise pollution regulations. Additionally, the establishments must ensure that their activities do not offend religious sentiments or involve obscene dances. Proper parking arrangements are also a prerequisite.

Responding to Shaikh's RTI application, the city police listed the 23 authorised pubs and discotheques, which are located in areas such as Mundhwa, Baner, Balewadi, Shivajinagar, Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Yerawada, Raja Bahadur Mills, Sangamwadi, and Shivajinagar, as per the Punekars News report.
However, Shaikh's findings suggest that the reality on the ground paints a very different picture. "Hundreds of pubs with dance areas operate illegally in Pune, with only a small fraction being verified and authorised by the police," he stated.
This revelation comes in the aftermath of the Kalyani Nagar Porsche accident on May 19, which claimed the lives of two IT professionals. The accident involved a juvenile driving a luxury car at high speed after allegedly consuming alcohol at two prominent clubs in the city.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar acknowledged the situation, stating, "There were 22 disc licenses issued from 2019 to 2023. We are reviewing the licenses and if any violations are noticed, the process of cancellation will be initiated."
Punekar News report quoted Ajinkya Udane, the Pune Co-Chapter Head of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) as saying, "As an association representative, we are going to request the Police Commissioner and the Pune Municipal Commissioner that a revisit to all the licenses is needed to the current scenario. The purpose been that the National Restaurant Association of India wants ease of Business in the Restaurant industry," Udane said.
