In separate news, the southern arm of Andheri’s reconstructed Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge was opened to traffic on Sunday, nearly 30 months after it was shut in November 2022. Cultural minister and Mumbai suburban guardian minister Ashish Shelar inaugurated the bridge alongside local BJP MLA Ameet Satam, who was credited for pushing the project forward. The southern arm of the CD Barfiwala flyover, which had earlier been misaligned with the Gokhale Bridge, was also opened.
Originally built in the 1960s, the bridge was declared unsafe after a partial collapse in 2018 killed two people. Reconstruction began in November 2021 but picked up pace only after the full closure in 2022. Satam blamed earlier delays on confusion between BMC and the railways under the previous civic leadership. Public support through the Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens Association and intervention by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also helped accelerate the work. The bridge is a key east-west connector in the city.
