Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha: Ahoi Ashtami is a day for the well-being of children which takes place on the eighth day of Kartik’s Krishna Paksha. This festival is also called Ahoi Athe. According to the Hindu Panchang, Ahoi Ashtami takes place four days after Karwa Chauth. Mothers keep the Ahoi Vrat, observing a rigorous fast, praying for the long and prosperous life of their children. Additionally, childless women seeking the blessings of progeny or mothers who wish good things for their children worship Ahoi Mata to get blessings. This year, Ahoi Ashtami falls on 13th October 2025.
One of the significant components of Ahoi Ashtami Vrat is listening to the Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha, mainly the Syau Mata ki Kahani or story. Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha: Syau Mata Ki Kahani Or Story In English
Once upon a time, a rich merchant lived with his seven sons, their wives, and a daughter. One day, before Diwali, the daughter was getting clay when she accidentally killed a hedgehog mother's baby. The angry hedgehog cursed the daughter, so she couldn't have kids. Instead, the youngest daughter-in-law promised to take the curse. Sadly, every time she had a baby, it died after six days, bringing much sadness to the family.
Looking for the solution to this problem, the merchant's wife went to a priest. He told her daughter-in-law to serve a black cow that was related to Syau Mata. The daughter-in-law took care of the cow every day with great devotion. Happy with her dedication, the cow told her she could ask for something. The daughter-in-law asked to be able to have children. The cow then led her across seven seas to Syau Mata.
The daughter-in-law was on her way to meet Syau Mata when she saved Garuda Pankhni's kids from a snake. Garuda Pankhni was thankful and flew them both to meet Syau Mata. Happy with her actions, Syau Mata blessed the daughter-in-law with seven sons and seven daughters-in-law. Back home, the daughter-in-law did the seven Ahoyis. The next day, the house was full of kids' laughter. Ever since then, people have celebrated Ahoi Ashtami to protect and bless their children. It shows us that real faith, helping others, and devotion can bring blessings.

Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha: Syau Mata Ki Kahani Or Story In Hindi
Ahoi Ashtami Vrat And Pooja Vidhi
On the evening of Ahoi Ashtami, women make a bright Ahoi idol with eight corners on the wall. They also draw or put up images of a hedgehog and her babies near the idol, or they use a printed Ahoi Ashtami picture. Before the worship, the area is cleaned and a square altar is set up. A water-filled pot is placed like a kalash, and the puja starts after sunset when the stars come out. Mothers carry out the rituals, listening to the Ahoi Mata Vrat Katha and Syau Mata story and seeking the blessings for their kids’ health and long lives.
For the puja, a silver Ahoi idol, known as Syau, is prepared ahead of time. It features two silver beads strung together like a pendant. The idol is worshipped with roli, rice, milk and cooked rice. A small bowl of halwa and a few coins are placed near it, along with seven grains of wheat used to follow the katha. After the vrat katha is read, the silver Ahoi necklace is worn, and the coins are respectfully given to the mother-in-law, showing devotion.
Mothers then give offerings to the stars to culminate the Ahoi Ashtami Vrat. On an auspicious day after Diwali, the silver Ahoi is taken down, offered jaggery, sprinkled with water and carefully put away. Silver beads are added for each son and married son to please Ahoi Mata and ask for her blessings. This custom is done to help the children live long and do well. Giving sweets like petha to priests on this day is also considered highly auspicious, bringing good spiritual benefits and energy to the home.

During Ahoi Ashtami, women create a silver locket shaped like Syau Mata. Each year, they add two silver beads during the prayer ritual. Wearing this necklace after fasting is considered very lucky, as it represents the safety and health of their children. Mothers observing the Ahoi Ashtami Vrat also avoid using sharp objects like knives to prevent harming any living thing.
