Bahula Ashtami 2025: Significance And Story
Radha Kunda's origin is linked to Bahulashtami, a festival that celebrates a story where the cow named Bahula sought shelter with Lord Krishna. On the banks of Krishna Kunda in Vrindavan, people worship figures of a cow and calf, a brahmana, a tiger and Shri Krishna. These figures tell the story of Bahula, who was once attacked by a tiger while grazing. Bahula asked the tiger to let her go back to feed her calf and say goodbye before being eaten. The tiger agreed.
After hearing Bahula's story, the cow, her calf, and their brahmana master were moved by selfless devotion and offered themselves as food to the tiger. At first, Bahula refused their sacrifice, but in the end, they all got ready to face the tiger as a group. The tiger was surprised by their honesty and bravery, and he stopped to think about who he should eat first. Because of their truthfulness and integrity, Lord Krishna noticed them, and he planned to step in to keep them safe.

At that crucial instant, Lord Krishna with chakra in hand, told the tiger that if he let Bahula and her friends go, he would be famous forever for saving those who act honourably. The cow, calf, and brahmana were very happy and thanked Krishna for his mercy. Because Bahula was so truthful, Krishna called the forest Bahulavan and said she would be his wife in her next life. People consider this sacred forest one of the holiest places in the Braj region since it contains the divine Radha Kunda.
