Who Are The 7 Chiranjeevi?
The word Chiranjeevi is derived from the Sanskrit words ‘Chiran,’ meaning eternal, and ‘jeevi’, meaning living being. These Chiranjeevi are blessed with immortality, some as a blessing while some as a curse. Together, these Chiranjeevi are believed to be present on Earth to serve a divine purpose.

Ashwatthama- The Cursed Immortal

Ashwatthama was the son of Guru Dronacharya, and he was the last person to survive in the battle. After the war, in grief and rage over his father's death, he killed the Pandavas ' sons at night and almost killed Uttara's unborn son.
Raged by his act, Lord Krishna cursed him to wander the earth for 3,000 years, bearing a wound on his forehead that would never heal.
Where Is He Now: It is believed he wanders the dense forests and remote regions bearing the unhealed wound.
2. King Mahabali- The Ever Generous King

King Mahabali was a demon king and the grandson of Parhalad, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. He was known for his extreme generosity, compassion and justice.
However, due to his growing influence, the devtas got worried because Mahabali was creating a cosmic imbalance. To restore it, Lord Vishnu took the Vamana avatar and approached King Mahabali.
He asked him for three steps of land, and the ever-generous Mahabali granted it without hesitation.
When there was no space to cover the third step, King Mahabali offered his own head. Moved by his devotion and complete surrender, Lord Vishnu blessed him with immortality and made him the ruler of Patala (the netherworld) with the promise that he could return to see his people once a year.
In Kerala, that annual return is celebrated as Onam.
Where Is He Now: King Mahabali visits Kerala once a year during the festival of Onam.
3. Maharishi Ved Vyasa- The Guru Of Knowledge

Maharishi Ved Vyasa is credited with writing the four Vedas and is also the person under whom Lord Ganesha wrote the epic Mahabharata. He has also composed 8 Puranas and the Brahma Sutras, which explain complex philosophical ideas in a way that even ordinary people can understand.
Ved Vyasa's immortality is neither cursed nor blessed, but a divine necessity. His immortality is not about personal gain but about ensuring that sacred knowledge is never forgotten.
Where Is He Now: He is believed to meditate in the great Himalayan cave, continuing his tapasya.
4. Lord Hanuman- The Ardent Devotee

Lord Hanuman is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism and an ardent devotee of Lord Rama. His role in the Ramayana is nothing short of heroic; He helped Lord Rama to find Goddess Sita, burned down Lanka with his fiery tail and played a key role in the battle that led to Ravana’s defeat.
When Lord Rama ruled on Earth, Lord Hanuman asked for the boon to live as long as Rama's name was spoken on Earth. His immortality reminds devotees that true devotion never dies and continues to grow and protect.
Where Is He Now: Lord Hanuman is believed to reside in the Gandhamadana mountain, constantly chanting Lord Ram's name.

5. Vibhishana - The Righteous One

Vibhishana was the brother of Ravana, who, instead of supporting him in wrong deeds, stood against him to establish dharma. Lord Rama, pleased by his devotion, courage and honesty, not only made him king of Lanka but also blessed him with immortality so that he could guide people to uphold dharma and do right deeds.
Where Is He Now: He is believed to still be ruling a subtle and invisible form of Lanka.

6. Parashurama- Avatar Of Lord Vishnu
Avatar: Sixth of Lord Vishnu
Boon granted by: Immortality as part of his divine purpose
Parashurama is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, born to sage Jamadagni and Renuka when the world was filled with arrogance of the Kshatriya class.
His mission was to destroy the corrupt Kshatriya class, who had abandoned dharma and were doing injustice to the people. He is said to have cleansed the Earth of such kings 21 times. His immortality as one of the seven Chiranjeevis destined to live until the end of the current cosmic cycle.
Where Is He Now: According to scriptures, he lives in deep penance on Mahendra mountain, patiently waiting for the arrival of Kalki, the final avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is also prophesied that he will become Kalki’s guru, destroy evil and end Kali Yuga.
7. Kripacharya- The Guru Of Pandava And Kauravas
Epic: Mahabharata
Boon granted by: Lord Krishna
Kripacharya was the guru of both Pandavas and Kauravas. He was a brilliant archer and skilled strategist respected for his impartiality and sense of duty. He was one of the three people who survived from the Kaurava side.
Blessed by Lord Krishna with immortality, Kripacharya's role is to preserve Dharma (righteousness) in a world filled with chaos.
Where Is He Now: He is believed to be travelling the world, guiding seekers and teaching them dharma.
