Chitragupta Puja 2025: Celebrated on the second day of the bright fortnight of the Kartik month, the festival of Chitragupta Puja is considered extremely important from a religious perspective. This festival is celebrated after Diwali, along with Bhai Dooj. On this day, Lord Chitragupta, who is believed to be the deity who keeps account of human deeds is worshipped. According to the Hindu calendar, this year, Chitragupta Puja will be celebrated on October 23rd. It is believed that by performing the puja properly on this day, one can attain liberation from obstacles and sinful deeds in life.

Chitragupta Puja 2025: Significance

Hinduism mentions 33 gods, among whom Lord Chitragupta holds a special place. He is considered the accountant of the gods, keeping a record of every person's deeds. After death, he decides who will be destined for heaven or hell. Lord Chitragupta is considered the assistant of Yamaraj and the celestial accountant. According to mythology, he was born from the mind of Lord Brahma, hence the name "Chitragupta."

Worshipping Lord Chitragupta is believed to increase knowledge, wisdom, and prosperity, while eliminating ignorance and poverty. He is especially worshipped on Bhai Dooj, a day of great significance for the Kayastha community.

Worship Of Pens, Account Books And Notebooks On Chitragupta Puja

Lord Chitragupta is believed to be the secretary of Yamaraj and keeps records of everyone's deeds. He is also known as the god of pens, inkpots, and writing. Therefore, pens, inkpots, and paper are worshipped on this day. On the day of Chitragupta Puja, people offer their books, pens, notebooks, and account books for worship. Students and businessmen alike perform special prayers to their pens and inkpots on this day, seeking knowledge, success, and prosperity. Traditionally, no study or writing is done on this day. It is believed that when pens and books are placed for worship, they too are in a state of rest. Therefore, it is considered auspicious not to use them on that day.

Chitragupta Puja 2025: Rituals

Prior to the Chitragupta puja, ensure the house is clean. Bathe and dress in fresh clothes. Put a yellow cloth on a wooden platform, then place an idol or image of Lord Chitragupta on it. Put your books, pens, and inkpots on the puja mat since they represent knowledge and writing. Start the puja by chanting Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah.

While worshipping Lord Chitragupta, offer roli, sandalwood paste, flowers, whole grains, and panchamrit. Light a ghee lamp and incense, and focus your thoughts on the Lord. Recite the mantra Om Chitraguptaaya Namah a minimum of 11 times.

Write "Shri Ganeshaya Namah" and "Om Chitraguptaaya Namah" on a blank piece of paper, then write your wishes. After this, recite this mantra: "Masibhajana samyuktacharasi tvam mahitale. Lekhni katinihaast Chitragupta namostute." After the puja, perform aarti and distribute prasad to everyone. At the end of the puja, ask God for forgiveness for any sins committed, both knowingly and unknowingly.
