Dhanteras 2025 or Dhanatrayodashi marks the start of the Diwali celebrations. People celebrate this sacred festival on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik. According to the Hindu beliefs, Dhanteras is considered highly auspicious to start new ventures and purchase valuable items. This day is additionally dedicated to the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kuber and Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, who is known for sharing Ayurveda's knowledge. On Dhanteras, devotees also pray for wealth, health, and overall well-being. This year, Dhanteras falls on 18th October 2025. While many people purchase gold, silver, new property, electronics and vehicles on Dhanteras, there are certain items that should not be purchased on this auspicious festival.
Below, we have mentioned a list of 7 inauspicious items that must not be purchased on Dhanteras:
Dhanteras 2025: 7 Inauspicious Things That Should Not Be Purchased
1. Items Made Of Glass
According to Hindu astrology, Glass is associated with the planet Rahu, so avoid purchasing anything made of glass on the auspicious day of Dhanteras. Glass also symbolises instability. Therefore, avoid purchasing glassware, mirrors or decorative items made of up glass on Dhanteras as these can bring negative energy into the home.
2. Ghee And Oil
It is believed that purchasing oil and ghee on Dhanteras does not bring auspicious results. If you need them, purchase them a day in advance. Buying them on this day could lead to financial difficulties in the home.
3. Sharp Objects
It is considered inauspicious to purchase knives, scissors, pins, needles or any sharp or pointed objects on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras. It is believed that sharp objects bring bad luck and negativity into the home, and they cut off the flow of prosperity.

5. Leather Items
The sacred festival of Dhanteras falls this year on a Saturday, so you should avoid buying leather goods on this day. Leather is also associated with the planet Saturn, so buying leather goods on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras could upset Lord Shani and invite Saturn's wrath.
6. Empty Utensils
If you're bringing any utensil or vessel, such as a pot, a pitcher, or a vase on Dhanteras, do not bring it home empty. You can put some sweets in it. Or you can also bring coriander or coriander seeds in the vessel. Bringing an empty vessel home on Dhanteras is considered inauspicious.
7. Items Made Of Iron
Iron is a metal associated with Saturn, so buying iron items on Dhanteras could prove to be disastrous and invite his malefic effects. If necessary, you can book iron items on this day and bring them home the next day.
