Govardhan Puja 2025: 56 Bhog Significance
Preparing 56 bhogs for Lord Krishna is a divine experience, consisting of 56 of his favourite dishes. This offering reflects the devotees' eternal love and respect for Krishna. All the dishes included in Chappan Bhog, whether fruits, vegetables, grains, or beverages, are considered dear to Lord Krishna.
This offering begins with pure and organic milk products, paying tribute to Lord Krishna's childhood. This is followed by a variety of delicious dishes, showcasing the diversity of culinary arts.
Why 56 Bhog Is Offered to Lord Krishna?
The tradition of 56 bhogs is linked to a poignant incident in the life of Lord Krishna. After protecting the villagers of Vrindavan by lifting the Govardhan mountain for seven days, Lord Krishna neither ate nor rested. After the crisis subsided, the Brajwasis inquired about Yashoda's feeding practices for her son. She mentioned that Krishna eats eight times daily. Inspired by this, the residents of Gokul resolved to prepare 56 distinct dishes for Krishna, allocating eight dishes for each day of the week.

To show their love and gratitude, Mother Yashoda, the gopis, and the cowherds prepared a sumptuous 56-dish feast. This emotional sacrifice came to represent unwavering devotion to the Lord and love. This explains why the custom of presenting 56 bhog to Lord Krishna on occasions such as Govardhan Puja and Janmashtami has grown so important.
