Govardhan Puja 2025, also known as Annakut Puja is a highly significant Hindu festival celebrated the day after Diwali. According to the Hindu Panchang, this festival falls on the Kartik Shukla Paksha Dwitiya. Goverdhan Puja is dedicated to commemorating the sacred occasion when Lord Krishna lifted the majestic Goverdhan Parvati on his little finger to protect the people of Vrindavan from torrential rain caused by Lord Indra. On this day, devotees express their gratitude by performing special puja, serving cows and offering bhog to Lord Krishna in the form of Annakoot, a symbolic mountain of food prepared with devotion. Some devotees also prepare 56 bhog items known as Chappan bhog. This year, Govardhan Puja will be observed on 22nd October 2025.

The Pratah Kala Govardhan Puja Muhurat is from 05:42 AM to 07:59 AM.
The Sandhya Kala Govardhan Puja Muhurat is from 02:52 PM to 05:09 PM.
Govardhan Puja 2025: Significance
The significance of Lord Govardhan Puja is described in the Vishnu Purana. It is believed that Lord Indra was using his authority in a wrong way, so Lord Krishna intervened to break his pride. According to a legend, Lord Krishna inspired the people of Gokul to worship Mount Govardhan, which was a pasture for their cows and a source of rain. This shattered Indra's pride, and he worshipped Lord Krishna.
On the day of Govardhan Puja, the people of Gokul, following Lord Krishna's advice, worshipped Mount Govardhan. Lord Krishna, using his power, lifted Mount Govardhan on his little finger, saving the people of Gokul. Indra accepted his defeat and apologised to Lord Krishna. From then on, the tradition of Govardhan Puja began, in which people circumambulate Mount Govardhan and worship Lord Krishna.

Annakoot During Govardhan Puja
Annakoot is celebrated in temples on the occasion of Govardhan Puja. Annakut or Annakoot consists of a mixture of various grains, which is used as an offering to Lord Krishna. In many places, millet khichdi and puri are prepared. Along with Annakut, sweets and various milk-based dishes are prepared to offer to Lord Krishna. After the puja, these dishes are distributed among devotees.
Govardhan Puja 2025: Rituals
Several special rituals are performed on the day of Govardhan Puja. A cow dung model of Mount Govardhan is made, decorated with flowers. Water, incense, fruits, and other offerings are offered to it. This puja is performed in the morning or evening. Bulls and cows that help in agriculture are honoured on this day.
Mount Govardhan is worshipped as a deity. An idol of Lord Krishna made of cow dung is placed on the ground, and offerings are made by lighting lamps and offerings to it. Lord Vishwakarma, the god of skilled craftsmanship, is also worshipped on this day. Machinery and industrial equipment are worshipped. Bhandara is organised in temples, and prasad is distributed.

An important aspect of Govardhan Puja is circumambulating the mountain made of cow dung. While circumambulating, Lord Govardhan is praised. Afterwards, barley is sown on the ground. Annakut, a mixture of various grains, is also prepared and offered to Lord Krishna. Lakhs of devotees visit Mathura to circumambulate Govardhan mountain and seek the blessings of Lord Krishna.
