The reason Gudi Padwa is celebrated is because it is thought that on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, which is observed on Gudi Padwa, Lord Brahma created the cosmos. In another tale, this day also marked the return of Lord Ram, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu, to Ayodhya following his victory over Ravana and the conclusion of his 14-year banishment.

Some people also think that Gudi Padwa is a celebration of the Marathas' 17th-century triumph over the Mughals. The tale states that following their victory, Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj raised a "gudi," and this custom has persisted ever since.
