Gudi Padwa 2025: Significance
Gudi Padwa is a significant harvesting season in India, marking the end of the Rabi season and the beginning of Kharif. According to Hindu legends, Lord Brahma created the universe on this day, and the festivities of the nine-day Chaitra Navratri also commence on this day.
The term 'gudi' symbolises victory and its origins are rooted in Marathi history. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his forces defeated foreign infiltrators and raised a 'Gudi' as a symbol of triumph. The story of Gudi is also linked to the Brahma Purana, which describes it as Lord Brahma's flag, placed after he created the world.
Gudi Padwa is celebrated under different names across India. In Telugu-speaking states, it's known as Ugadi or Yugadi, while in Gujarat, Sindhi Hindus celebrate it as Cheti Chand. Similarly, it's called Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Baisakhi in Punjab, Thapna in Rajasthan and Sajubu Nongma Padwa in Manipur, showcasing the diversity and richness of Indian culture.
