Mahashivratri 2026: Significance
There are a number of well-acknowledged legends associated with the sacred festival of Mahashivratri. These include Lord Shiva acquiring the name “Neelkanth” or blue-throated for saving the universe by consuming poison during the churning of the ocean. It is also said that Shivratri is the sacred night when Shiva united with Goddess Parvati.
Some Hindu legends also suggest that it was on this night that Mahadev first manifested himself as a Jyotirlinga. The people who observe fast and remain awake throughout this sacred night with true devotion are believed to attain good health, happiness, wealth, and peace of mind.
Mahashivratri 2026: Rituals
Many devotees keep a strict fast on the day, consuming only fruits or milk. Shiva temples are especially open throughout this sacred night, with pujas, bhajans, and kirtans being performed. One of the most sacred acts performed on the day of the festival is the Rudrabhishek, where a special ahishekam of Lord Shiva is performed with milk, honey, and Ganga Jal.
Mahashivratri 2026: Puja Vidhi
On the sacred day of Mahashivratri, the devotees must wake up during the Brahma Muhurat and vow to uphold the vrat. Perform the abhishekam of the shivling with milk, curd, ghee, honey and gangajal. Additionally, smear the shivlingam with chandan paste. Offer bhang, datura, bel patra, shami leaves, flowers and ber fruit to Mahadev.
