Mahavir Jayanti 2026 is all set to be celebrated on 31st March 2026. On the special occasion of the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the members of the Jain community recall the invaluable teachings of Lord Mahavir, principles that continue to guide them on the right path. As the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, Lord Mahavir bestowed upon the world a message of truth, non-violence, and love.
The key principles he shared with humankind are not only essential to bring peace but also to transform the perspective on how to live life. We have shared 7 of these key teachings below:
Mahavir Jayanti 2026: 7 Teachings From 24th Jain Tirthankar Lord Mahavir To Change Your Life
1. Ahimsa (Non-Violence)
The most important message of Lord Mahavir is 'Ahimsa Paramo Dharma' or 'Non-violence is the supreme duty.' This means that violence does not only mean killing, but having bad thoughts about someone or speaking harsh words to them also means violence. Lord Mahavir also said that just as we feel pain, all living beings in this world, whether big or small, feel the same pain. When we practice non-violence, fear and hatred do not remain in our minds, and we learn to live in peace.
2. Satya (Truth)
According to Mahavir Swami, speaking the truth is not only a good habit, but it is also a way to purify the soul. When we lie, we burden our minds, and we are in a state of fear all the time. When we find the courage to speak the truth in all circumstances, our self-confidence increases, and people start to trust us. When we are truthful, we are mentally free and fearless.
3. Aparigha (Non-Attachment)
In today's busy and fast-paced lifestyle, the concept of Aparigraha is of the utmost significance. This term refers to the avoidance of the accumulation of material goods beyond what is actually required. Lord Mahavir emphasised the point that excessive attachment to material goods or money is the main cause of all suffering. As we minimise the pursuit of material comforts and luxuries, we gain mental peace. This concept enables us to understand the real significance of the term Renunciation.

4. Kshama (Forgiveness)
Lord Mahavir Swami said, "Kshama Virasya Bhushanam" - forgiveness is an ornament of the brave. It is easy to punish anyone, but it is noble to forgive anyone. Forgiving anyone is actually liberating ourselves from the fires of hatred and revenge burning inside our own minds. It is only the forgiving person who can move forward in life.
5. Brahmacharya (Physical And Mental Restraint)
Brahmacharya not only means control of physical urges but also control of our senses and mind. According to Lord Mahavir, “He is the real conqueror who is able to control his restless mind and his desires.” By practising self-restraint, we not only increase our energy but also get direction towards our bigger goals in life. We also become disciplined and strong.
6. Asteya (Non-Stealing)
Asteya is the quality of not stealing anything. Lord Mahavir has stated that it is wrong to take anything that is owned by someone else without their permission. This also includes violating someone else’s rights and profiting by doing so in an unscrupulous manner. This proverb motivates us to work hard and honestly in life. If we find satisfaction in the money that we earn by working hard, we never face regret in life, and our prestige in society is also boosted.
7. Anekantavada (Mutisidedness)
This is the most profound scientific insight that Lord Mahavir had to offer. He emphasised that there could be more than one point of view in relation to any particular issue. We generally believe that our point of view is right, but we think that other people's views are absolutely wrong. This creates conflict. Anekantavada also teaches us that we should respect other people's views. If we try to understand other people’s points of view, then all conflicts will be dissolved.
