Margashirsha Month 2023: The ninth month in the Hindu Calendar is known as Margashirsha. This month is considered highly auspicious and it is very dear to Lord Krishna as he states in the Bhagavad Gita - “Maasanam Margashirshoऽam Nakshatraanaam Tathbhijit”, which means among all the months, I am Margashirsha. During this auspicious month, people perform Goddess Lakshmi Puja on Thursdays and also offer veneration to Lord Krishna. The Amavasya and Purnima falling in this pious month also hold a major significance. It is said that one must also perform Tarpan during this sacred month in remembrance of their ancestors as it grants them salvation. This year, the Margashirsha month will begin on 28th November 2023 and will end on 26th December 2023.
Mrugashira star, or Mrigasira nakshatra, falls close to Purnima day during the month of Margashira. This month is designated as Margashirsh as a result. It is advantageous to perform Shiva, Vishnu, Dattatreya, and Hanuman pujas during this month. The Bengali calendar also refers to the month of March as Agrahayana or Agrahayon. The second month in the traditional Gujarati calendar is called Margashirsha. Margashirsha Month falls between Karthigai Masam and Margali Masam in the Tamil calendar and Vrischika Masam and Dhanurmasam in the Malayalam calendar.
