Masik Durga Ashtami August 2025: Rituals

Devotees of Goddess Durga fast for a day and worship her eight forms to receive blessings on the sacred day of Durga Ashtami. During the puja, they offer Kheer and Halwa to the divine Goddess. Young girls are also worshipped and chana and halwa are also offered to them as a part of the rituals. A sacred pot, usually made of copper or other special materials, is placed on an altar adorned with water, mango leaves, and coconut. An image of Mother Durga is set up, and people offer flowers while chanting her names, seeking her divine blessings and safety.

The worship of the divine Goddess on Masik Durga Ashtami involves a sacred bath and sixteen kinds of offerings to the Maa Durga, like Panchamrit made with curd, milk, honey, clarified butter, and sugar. Other gifts include fruits, dry fruits, resins, betel leaves and nuts. At the culmination of the worship, aarti is performed and the rituals end by inviting nine little girls, washing their feet with holy water, and giving them gifts. The day-long fast ends by asking for the blessings of Maa Durga.
