The devotees are only permitted to use water twice during the Nirjala Ekadashi fast. The first time is when you take a bath early on Brahma Muhurta morning. The second instance occurs during the ritualistic water sipping known as Achaman, which is a component of the resolve to fast.

Other than these two situations, the devotees need to avoid water completely. According to the Hindu legends, Maharishi Ved Vyas Ji also advised Bhima to use only a small amount of water, no more than six mouthfuls for Achaman on Nirjala Ekadashi. Food, fruits and juices should also be avoided on this day.

The devotees can consume water after performing the Parana of Nirjala Ekadashi. The devotees who are observing Nirjala Ekadashi on 6th June can drink water after doing the parana following the Hari Vasara on 7th June 2025. Additionally, the devotees who are observing the Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat on 8th June must perform the parana on 8th June 2025 after Sunrise and before the Dwadashi end moment.
