Parivartini or Parsva Ekadashi is observed since ancient times and is thought to bring happiness, wealth and health to devotees. This sacred Ekadashi Vrat is also believed to free the devotees from past sins and the cycle of rebirth. Keeping this sacred fast is said to strengthen willpower and offer great spiritual rewards.
This Ekadashi Vrat is particularly significant because it occurs during the holy Chaturmas period, when the rewards of keeping Ekadashi fast are considered much greater than in other months. Parivartini Ekadashi 2025: Rituals
Lord Krishna explained the significance of Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat to Arjuna during the Mahabharata. Arjuna, son of Pandu, wanted to know more about this sacred vrat. Lord Krishna said that observing the Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat can wipe away all sins. He then told a story from the Treta Yuga about Bali, a demon king famous for giving to others, being honest, and his faith, who at one point took Indra's place in heaven.
Worried about Bali's increasing strength, Indra and other gods asked Lord Vishnu for assistance. To safeguard the heavens, Vishnu became Vamana, a modest Brahmin boy and went to King Bali. He asked for enough land to cover three steps. Bali, famous for his kindness, quickly accepted. Vamana then showed his true divine form, covering the Earth, heaven and Brahmaloka with his first two huge steps.
With no other space left for His third step, Bali respectfully offered his head. Vamana then placed His foot on Bali's head, sending him to the underworld. Though he granted Bali the kingship of that place. Lord Krishna explained that out of love, one aspect of Vishnu stays with King Bali, as another rests on Sheshnaga in the Ocean of Milk. So, it's believed that on Parivartini Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu turns over during His cosmic sleep.
