Purnima May 2025: Vaishakh Purnima, the full moon day in the Hindu month of Vaishakha (April–May), holds deep spiritual importance for both Hindus and Buddhists. Devotees usually observe a fast on this day to seek spiritual growth and cleanse their sins. This full moon is especially significant as it marks the birth anniversary of Lord Vishnu’s ninth incarnation, Gautam Buddha. It is also believed that Ved Vyas began composing the Mahabharata on Vaishakha Purnima. Additionally, this day marks the beginning of the month of Jyestha, which is often regarded as unfavourable for certain rituals and activities in Hindu traditions. This year, Vaishakh Purnima will be observed on 12th May 2025.

Purnima May 2025: Vaishakh Purnima Significance

The fifteenth of Shukla Paksha is the full moon every month. However, Vaishakh Purnima is especially spiritually significant because the month of Vaishakh is very sacred according to Hinduism. Fasting on this day is said to bring fortune and strong health. Satya Narayan Puja is performed by devotees to attain the blessings of Lord Vishnu and prayers are also offered to Dharmaraja to overcome the fear of premature death or akaal mrityu. Worship on this day is believed to purify sins and bring spiritual wellness.

As per the Hindu legends, Lord Krishna once suggested his friend Sudama to fast on Vaishakh Purnima to obtain wealth and prosperity. Therefore, the day represents not only piety but also opulence. Vaishakha Purnima is also observed as Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti, the birthday of Gautam Buddha. It is a very important day for Buddhists as well, representing aspects of enlightenment and peace. Also, Tamil Hindus celebrate this day as Chitra Pournami.

Purnima May 2025: Vaishakh Purnima Rituals

On Vaishakha Purnima, devotees start the day early in the morning by taking a bath and wearing clean garments in preparation for the sacred rituals. The rituals begin with worship of Lord Vishnu and Lord Hanuman and praying for their good wishes of success and happiness. The morning rituals also involve making offerings of arghya (water offering) to the Sun God and reciting the Surya Mantra or chanting 'Om Suryaya Namah' to attract positive energy and divine blessings into the day.

Worship of Lord Satyanarayana and Goddess Lakshmi is also performed on this day. The Satyanarayan Katha is read as part of the ritual. Devotees make bhog (holy food offering) and offer it to the deities, along with offerings of fruits, banana leaves, supari, incense sticks, mauli (holy thread) and sandalwood paste.

At night, devotees worship the Moon God by offering arghya with water and milk. It is highly rewarding to perform the acts of charity on this day. Donating a vessel full of uncooked food (kaccha anna) on Vaishakh Purnima is considered very auspicious and aids in the purification of sins and earning good karma.
