Sawan 2025: The month of Sawan holds great spiritual importance in Hinduism, especially for devotees of Lord Shiva. It is believed that during this time, the divine energies are most active, making it highly auspicious for worship, fasting and spiritual reflection. Devotees, particularly women, observe various rituals to seek blessings for health, prosperity and marital harmony. Mondays of Sawan, known as Shravan Somwar, are considered especially powerful for pleasing Lord Shiva. However, to ensure that the worship is spiritually effective and respectful, certain dos and don’ts must be followed. These traditional guidelines help maintain purity, discipline and devotion throughout this sacred month.

This year, Sawan month begins on 11th July 2025 and ends on 9th August 2025. Check out the list of essential dos and don’ts that must be observed during this sacred month below:

Sawan 2025: Essential Dos And Don’ts You MUST Observe During This Month

Observe Fasts on Mondays

One of the most meaningful ways to honour Lord Shiva during Sawan is by observing fasts on Mondays, known as Shravan Somwar. These fasts reflect devotion and discipline. Many choose to consume only fruits or simple sattvic meals. Fasting with sincere intention is believed to bring peace, prosperity and divine blessings.

Don’t Consume Non-Vegetarian Food or Alcohol

During Sawan, it’s important to maintain purity in thoughts and actions, which includes diet. Devotees should avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol, as these are considered tamasic and spiritually impure. Keeping to a sattvic, vegetarian diet helps in aligning with the spiritual energy of the month and showing respect to Lord Shiva.

Offer Water, Milk and Belpatra to Shiva

Offering sacred items like water, milk, curd, honey and Belpatra to the Shiva Linga is a cherished ritual during Sawan. These offerings symbolise surrender, purification and love. It’s believed that such gestures of devotion help cleanse one’s karma and draw Lord Shiva’s protective and transformative energy into one’s life.

Don’t Offer Turmeric or Tulsi Leaves To Shiva

Though used widely in Hindu worship, turmeric and Tulsi leaves should never be offered to Lord Shiva. Turmeric is linked to feminine energy, while Tulsi is sacred to Lord Vishnu. Offering these items is considered inappropriate and may disturb the spiritual harmony of the ritual, so it’s best to avoid them completely.

Wake Up Early and Maintain Cleanliness

Rising early during Sawan and beginning the day with a bath and prayer creates a calm and positive mindset. Cleanliness in the body, home and puja space is essential to welcome divine blessings. A tidy and peaceful environment enhances the spiritual quality of worship and brings clarity and inner balance.

Don’t Lose Temper or Speak Harshly

Sawan encourages self-discipline not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too. It’s important to avoid anger, gossip or speaking hurtfully. Keeping your speech kind and your mind calm honours Lord Shiva, who is known for both his meditative silence and his fierce form when provoked. Practice patience and mindfulness throughout the month.
