It is also believed that observing Kamika Ekadashi can remove Pitru Dosha, the karmic burden passed down through ancestors or from past lives. Devotees seek blessings from Lord Vishnu using sacred Tulsi leaves, which hold special significance in this puja. The day encourages self-discipline, inner reflection and detachment from worldly desires. Worship during Shravan month is especially potent, as it is said to bring the same merits as worshipping Nagas and Gandharvas.
The legend behind Kamika Ekadashi reinforces its significance. It tells the story of a landlord who, in a fit of anger, killed a Brahmin priest. Consumed by guilt and shunned by the priest’s kin, he sought spiritual redemption. A wandering saint advised him to observe Kamika Ekadashi with full devotion. The landlord followed the instructions faithfully, praying beside Lord Vishnu’s idol. That night, Vishnu appeared in his dreams and freed him from the heavy burden of his sins.
