The Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2024 kick off on January 19, spanning across four vibrant cities in Tamil Nadu—Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Trichy. This marks a historic moment as the Games enter their sixth edition, being the first time the KIYG will unfold in the southern region of the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Guest in the opening ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. The multi-sport extravaganza, tailored for athletes under the age of 18, is scheduled to captivate enthusiasts from January 19th to January 31st, 2024.
As the flagship event under the Khelo India initiative by the government of India, the games aim to nurture sports at the grassroots level. For the first time, fans can witness the action-packed KIYG 2024 through live streaming and telecast across the nation.
Operating in a unique team championship format, individual and team achievements collectively contribute to the overall medals tally of their respective state or Union Territory (UT). The competition culminates with the state or UT securing the highest count of gold medals being crowned as the champion.
With a staggering participation of over 5600 athletes, the 13-day spectacle unfolds in 15 venues, featuring 26 sporting disciplines, over 275 competitive events, and 1 demo sport. Athletes are poised to compete for 933 medals—278 gold, 278 silver, and 377 bronze—in 26 diverse sports at KIYG 2024. The mascot for this edition is Veera Mangai.
Adding to the excitement, Squash is set to make its debut in the Khelo India Youth Games, while Silambam—an indigenous martial art form—will mark its debut as a demonstration sport, enriching the cultural and sporting tapestry of the event.
Maharashtra stands as the reigning champions in the KIYG, with Haryana being the sole team to have also secured the title.
The host state Tamil Nadu will showcase the largest contingent, boasting a team of 559 participants. Maharashtra follows closely with a robust squad of 415 athletes competing across 24 sports disciplines, while Haryana fields a lineup of 491 athletes.
