Vinesh Phogat Appeal Verdict: Vidushpat Singhania, the lawyer representing Vinesh Phogat and the Indian Olympic Association, is optimistic about a favourable outcome in the wrestler's appeal against her Paris Olympics 2024 disqualification.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) verdict on Vinesh's appeal against her disqualification at the Paris Olympics is expected to be announced today, August 13. Vinesh was disqualified for being overweight by 100 grams and has requested a joint silver medal in the 50kg wrestling category.
Singhania is anticipating a decision in Vinesh's favour from the CAS ad-hoc panel that heard the Indian wrestler's case, which could potentially set a new precedent.
"The hearing took place on August 9 and the verdict is expected by 9.30 pm tonight. Vinesh was represented by 4 lawyers. She is the applicant and United World Wrestling (UWW) and International Olympic Committee are the respondents and Indian Olympic Association is an interested party. We hope the decision will come in Vinesh's favour. She is a champion no matter what CAS's verdict is and should be respected like one," Singhania told ANI.

After Vinesh was disqualified for being 100 grams over the weight limit before her gold medal match she filed a petition to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) to be awarded a joint silver medal.
Vinesh, who had a remarkable run in the Paris Olympics, winning three matches convincingly, including a notable victory over Japan's Yui Susaki, was unexpectedly disqualified from competing in the gold medal match against Sarah Hildebrandt to being 100 grams over the weight limit during the routine morning weigh-in, despite her impressive performance that earned her a spot in the final.
Just a day after her dreams of winning an Olympic gold medal were shattered due to a mere 100-gram weight discrepancy, Vinesh made a shocking announcement, revealing her decision to retire from wrestling, citing that she no longer has the emotional strength to continue in the sport.
The Indian Wrestler's appeal against her Olympic disqualification was heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Friday. During the three-hour virtual hearing, Vinesh presented her case to the court, seeking to overturn the decision.
The CAS had officially registered her appeal and scheduled the hearing for Friday evening.
Vinesh's legal representatives contended that her disqualification was an unfortunate consequence of a minor weight discrepancy, rather than any intentional wrongdoing. They emphasized that she exceeded the weight limit by a mere 100 grams during the weigh-in preceding her gold medal match in the women's 50kg wrestling category on August 7, and that this technicality should not have led to her disqualification.
