JE Technology Desk: AI, as a keyword, witnessed a boom in media reports after the launch of the popular language model ChatGPT last year. This innovation by OpenAI sparked the advancement race among big tech firms, including Google and Microsoft, the ripple effects of which continue to come to the fore. But other than the famous language model, more AI tools debuted in 2022 that turned heads in their respective fields.

Here is a list of the top five AI tools that acted as the foundation stone for AI innovation in 2023 and will continue to fuel these discoveries in the years to come.

ChatGPT

OpenAI launched ChatGPT on November 30, 2022. This language model became the internet's most loved AI toy because of the conversational style answers to chat queries. Users of ChatGPT continue to use it for diverse purposes, including writing poems and finishing homework. Currently, the language model is powered by the advanced GPT-4 model. An iOS app of ChatGPT is available for easy access on smartphones.

DALL-E 2

While the ChatGPT maker unveiled the DALL-E in 2021, the waitlist to access the image generation tool was axed on September 28, 2022, after its beta release in July last year. Users can create images via textual prompts in the input box. It also supports image editing and forging new versions out to them. This generative AI image creator also powers Microsoft's Bing Image Creator.

Midjourney

Be it Elon Mark vs Mark Zuckerberg or superheroes in India, this powerful AI tool has given the world some jaw-dropping images that are next to real. It launched on July 12, 2022, in open beta. The latest version is Midjourney v5.2, which launched in June this year. This image generation tool can fake famous personalities with great details, which has a set of negatives besides being a plus point.

Meta's Voice Translation

Meta open-sourced the first AI-powered "speech-to-speech translation" system that can curb speech barriers in both the physical and virtual world (metaverse) via audio translation of verbal input. It is limited to Hokkien, a language spoken primarily in Mainland China and parts of Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore and the Philippines.

Ithaca: The AI Historian

Announced by DeepMind, Ithaca is the first "Deep Neural Network" which can restore texts," geographical and chronological attribution of ancient Greek inscriptions" with 62 per cent accuracy.
