Amazon Prime Video introduced advertisements for users watching the video content on the app on Monday in a planned move that was notified in September 2023. Several media reports highlighted how the company is now infiltrating the otherwise disruption-free experience and asking viewers for $2.99 per month in the US to enjoy an ad-free viewing like the past.

According to Amazon's announcement, these limited ads will help them in continued investment in the content on Prime Video. These ads will start appearing in the US, UK, Canada and Germany in early 2024. "France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia" will join the list later this year. However, Amazon promised "meaningfully fewer ads" compared to the competition.

"Movies and TV shows included with Prime now have limited ads. You can upgrade to ad-free anytime," the text in the prompt read. It will serve as an additional source of income for the company over and above the principal price of the Amazon Prime plan. This comes amid the price spike by other OTT players like Netflix, Disney, and more across several parts of the world.

The ad-free tier will add $2.99 additional cost to Prime's $14.99/month and Prime Video's $8.99/month plan. The new additional amount (if added) will take the cost to $17.98 and $11.98. According to a Business Insider report, Amazon speculates that these ads may reach over 115 million users in the US monthly. In the past, Prime's counterpart - Netflix and Disney+ introduced their ad-supported plans.

While ads between movies and shows on Prime Video might appear as a downside for some, the Prime subscription offers a range of other benefits.
