Apple, a Cupertino-based tech giant, is rumoured to launch the iPhone 16 series in September 2024. The handsets are expected to offer a range of upgrades in the internals. In a recent report, The Information shed light on one possible enhancement. The report noted the company is working to simplify battery replacement on the iPhone and this technology may debut this year.
This move could be an attempt to comply with the EU's regulations that require smartphone companies to have batteries that can be swapped by the user via readily available tools next year. As per the sources cited in the report, the company is considering "electrically induced adhesive debonding" technology to reach this goal.
According to MacRumors, the existing mechanism of battery replacement involves removing the attached adhesive strips. If these strips tear apart, a more cumbersome process such as heat or solvents to release the adhesive may be required. Once this is done, specialised parts are required to install a new battery.
However, the upcoming technology may remove the battery (which could be encased in a metal shell) from the chassis via a small low-voltage burst of electricity. While this may ease the process, the extensive process to reach the battery may still be in place. This involves dealing with the IP-tight gums and screws of the device. The Information noted this method could be introduced on one of the iPhones this year and all iPhone 17 series models in 2025.
However, Apple will likely still recommend professional help with the procedure. The tech giant may be reportedly exempted from this user-friendly battery replacement legislation if its devices meet the criteria, including 83 per cent battery capacity after 500 charge cycles, 80 per cent after 1,000 charges and a minimum IP67 rating. The latest iPhone 15 meets all these criteria.
