Apple is rumoured to launch the iPhone 16 series this year in September. The lineup will likely include four models: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. While we are months away from launch, the rumour mill churns out massive details at regular intervals about the upcoming iPhones.
Among the highly anticipated changes we expect are in the camera department of all models this year. While the vanilla and Plus iPhones could get a vertical camera module, the 'Pro' iterations may offer an improved ultrawide and telephoto lens. Apart from these, a Capture button could debut to capture some part of the side frame of these iPhones. Here is a more detailed look at these possible upgrades.
iPhone X-Like Camera Module: Apple could bring back the vibes of the iPhone X on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus because of a vertical camera placement instead of a diagonal array. According to MacRumors, the dual cameras could sit on a raised surface inside the pill-shaped housing. The change is reportedly being considered to allow Spatial Video recording support for the Vision Pro headset on the non-Pro models.
Capture Button: All iPhone 16 series phones may offer a 'Capture' button to trigger camera and video recording in a flash. It could have the functionality to zoom in and out via left and right fingerprint swipes on this button. The button could sport pressure sensitivity to start recording and focus in the frame. It could sit below the power button on the iPhone 16 models.

Ultrawide and Telephoto Upgrades: The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max may get a 48MP ultrawide lens on the back, according to tech analyst Jeff Pu. It is said to bring improved output (via pixel binning) in low light and capture more details. This upgrade could bring 48MP Pro RAW mode to the ultrawide sensor.
Moreover, according to the Weibo account 'Digital Chat Station', the upcoming Pro models may offer improved zoom performance via a large camera sensor. These models could have a periscope-level zoom of more than 300mm.
Tetraprism Lens on 'Pros': TF International Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max may have a tetraprism telephoto lens. This could imply both the 'Pro' models may offer a 5x optical and 25x digital zoom range, which is currently offered only on 15 Pro Max. For the unaware, the iPhone 14 Pro offers 3x optical zoom.
Lower Lens Flare: The iPhone 16 Pro series is expected to get an anti-reflective coating on the camera lenses for improved output and flare reduction. According to 'yeux1122' on the Naver blog, the new atomic layer deposition (ALD) equipment in the production line could be used to apply the coating.
