Apple Silicon Mac external GPU support: Initially, the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple used to have Intel's processor inside its systems, a fact that changed more than half a decade ago when the company dropped its first M1 processor for Mac. But with its own in-house chip came some big changes, and AMD and Nvidia eGPUs were phased out with it, but it seems like Apple is going back to its previous arrangement. A software firm has recently announced that the tech giant has approved its drivers for AMD and Nvidia eGPUs that can now run on Apple silicon.

M Series Mac Devices To Support AMD, Nvidia eGPUs
Tech firm Tiny Corp has announced, via a post on X, that its drivers have been approved for Apple's desktop computers, powered by the M series processors. The company elaborated further and said that both Nvidia and AMD GPUs will be able to run on Apple's M-series silicon. Furthermore, users with a “Thunderbolt or USB 4 eGPU” from any of the graphic card makers, Nvidia or AMD, will have the option to directly externally connect those GPUs with the devices powered by the M series chip. Although gamers need to hold their horses, as this eGPU extension serves a different purpose, as it's there to handle and execute AI-based tasks rather than rendering games. “It's so easy to install now, a Qwen could do it, and then it can run that Qwen,” the company said.

Generally speaking, these eGPUs fulfill the requirement of additional graphics when needed, and with the advent of AI, the need for GPUs has skyrocketed, as researchers locally running and testing their AI suits require that additional GPU computation.
While Apple's M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5 chips come with pre-installed integrated GPUs that are good for some tasks, they might not render themselves useful for everyone and might still be behind eGPUs; thus, this move from Apple looks like a catch-up by the company that lags behind in the AI race.
