While we were hearing rumours about the development of a smart ring from the South Korean giant Samsung, Apple is also reportedly not far behind when it comes to intelligent finger accessories. According to a new patent discovered by AppleInsider, the Smart Ring proposes haptic feedback on notifications along the lines of an Apple Watch.

As per the report, the surface could be pressure sensitive and respond when pressed. The new patent "Ring Input Device With Pressure-Sensitive Input" hints about this update. In 2015, the company was planning on a ring-style accessory with haptic feedback, a camera and voice access. After this, in 2019, the company aimed for a product like the Apple Watch for the wearer's finger.

In the latest patent, the company is exploring the possibility of embedding notification alerts on the inner part and controls on the outside. "Electronic finger rings can be employed as unobtrusive, everyday communication devices that are readily available to communicate wirelessly with other devices," citing the application, Apple Insider reports.

In the document, the Cupertino-based tech giant added that the understanding of the ring also expands to "a necklace, hoop earrings, electronic bracelet bands that are worn around the wrist, electronic toe rings, and the like."

It will likely receive inputs from the wearer's device and send output to the ring via vibrations for notifications. The smart ring may have a "rotating outer band" with a fixed centre part and the inside. This part could be moved to scroll through a list or be touch-sensitive. Apple's ring may also have the functionality to change TV channels and switch on lights.

Considering the details in the document and Apple's focus towards an integrated eco-system, the ring could have wide support across Apple products such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, headphones, smartwatches and the highly-anticipated Vision Pro headset, which the company calls the spatial computer.
