Apple Suspends AI Summarization: Apple is halting an AI-driven feature after it generated misleading news alerts. The feature, which summarized headlines for iPhone users, came under fire when the BBC filed a complaint regarding an incorrect news notification.

The alert, which bore the BBC logo, falsely claimed that Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had taken his own life. Other erroneous alerts included one stating that tennis star Rafael Nadal had publicly declared his homosexuality, and another claiming Luke Littler had won the PDC World Darts Championship before competing.

Apple has announced that the feature will be suspended in the upcoming software update, and it acknowledged that several other news organizations were impacted. For instance, a notification from the New York Times erroneously reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested.

"Notification summaries for the news and entertainment category will be temporarily unavailable," Apple said in a statement. "We are working on improvements and will make them available in a future software update."

The AI feature, part of Apple’s Apple Intelligence initiative, has been available in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, but not in the EU or China. While initially, Apple had stated that it would simply update the feature to address the inaccuracies, the National Union of Journalists in the UK had urged Apple to remove the service altogether, citing its role in spreading misinformation online.

The feature aimed to consolidate news alerts into a single notification on iPhone lock screens. Apple is now working on a revised version that will highlight potential errors, including using italicized text as a warning.

“We’re pleased that Apple has listened to our concerns and is pausing the summarisation feature for news,” a BBC spokesperson commented. “We look forward to working with them constructively on next steps. Our priority is the accuracy of the news we deliver to audiences which is essential to building and maintaining trust.”
