This suggests that Apple might be looking forward to increasing the megapixel count in its camera hardware, something that the tech giant has not changed for a while. While details about the supposed upgrade are scarce with no official confirmation so far, this move would suggest that the company might be trying to catch up with the current industry trends that are pushing for higher megapixel counts. The most interesting thing to note is that leaks suggest this sensor might be featuring in an upcoming flagship device from a Chinese brand.

A 200MP Camera On The Horizon?

There’s a new leak suggesting that Apple could be planning a major camera upgrade for future iPhones. According to tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the company is currently testing a 200-megapixel sensor that’s said to be around 1/1.12-inch in size. If this turns out to be true, Apple could introduce this high-resolution camera as early as next year, hinting at a possible shift in its camera strategy.

Interestingly, the same sensor is also expected to show up in an upcoming Oppo flagship, the Find X9 Ultra. The tipster claims that Oppo’s device could feature dual 200-megapixel cameras along with a 10x telephoto lens and may launch as soon as April. If that happens, Oppo could end up taking an early lead in terms of camera hardware.

That said, there’s no official confirmation from Apple so far. The company is known for keeping hardware details tightly under wraps until launch, so it’s best to treat these claims cautiously for now, as final specifications could still change.

Another thing that we must note is the fact that this is not the first time that news of Apple amping up its camera hardware and switching to a 200MP camera is coming to fore. The same tipster had suggested in May of 2025 that an unnamed iPhone device could sport a 200 MP camera.

A report from Stanley Morgan's research note in January claimed that the iPhone 21 series is expected to make its debut in 2028 and could be the first Apple device to support a 200-MP camera. The report also suggests that the company might be arranging the same CMOS sensor from Samsung, with production being set up in Texas. Reports also suggest that Apple chose Samsung above Sony for this camera venture due to performance issues, and STMicro was being considered as a potential candidate to source LiDAR sensors.
