JE Technology Desk: Apple recently announced its premium Mixed Reality headset, Vision Pro, at WWDC 2023 at a jaw-dropping price tag of $3,499, which converts to Rs 2.88 lakh. And to assemble a sweet deal for buyers and bring the cost down, Mark Gurman, Chief Correspondent, Bloomberg notes the tech giant is working on a more affordable version of the headset so that it reaches more faces.
But how will the company manage to bring the price down? Gurman tried to answer this question in his latest newsletter. "It won't be an easy task," considering Vision Pro is priced "at or near" the cost that goes into its making. The camera and sensor system, dual performance chips and 4K displays are among the most expensive components of the MR headset.

The company may compromise on some of these specs to make the future siblings of the Vision Pro lenient on the pocket. Apple may use low-res displays, a chip comparable to processors inside iPhones or previous generation Macs and cut down on optics. The speculated headset could have a simpler design with AirPods integration for Audio rather than in-built speakers. It may switch to physical IPD (Interpupillary distance) and remove or alter features such as the 3D camera.
All this, fused with an optimised production approach, "economies of scale," and a cheaper build, could help shave a couple of hundred USDs from the price tag.
Speaking of features that will likely stay or remain uncompromised, EyeSight - which shows the eyes of the wearer, and the gesture tracking mechanism may stand strong because of their usability in the upcoming cheaper unit.
Further, Gurman speculates that the non-Pro model could be called Vision or Vision One. The world may witness Apple's tightfisted version of the Vision Pro somewhere at the end of 2025. Plus, the reliable tipster also adds that Apple is working on the successor of the newly showcased Vision Pro with a faster chip.
The Vision Pro won't have a "real future" due to the 7X price against its closest rival, probably Meta, Gurman writes. Meanwhile, buyers still have nine months to swallow the gigantic price tag of the Vision Pro before it finally arrives in the hands of consumers.
