Apple iPadOS 18 Update: Apple today announced the latest iPadOS 18 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. The new OS includes a Calculator with Math Notes and handwriting tools in Notes aided by the Apple Pencil. Moreover, the OS bring added customisation for the Home Screen and Control Center. On the expected lines, the version also brings Apple Intelligence.

To begin with, the Math Notes calculator will allow an eligible iPad user to write or type mathematical expressions and see them solve in their handwriting. It also gets a new graphing feature. Moreover, the company's Smart Script feature will improve the legibility of the written word while maintaining the natural essence of a user's handwriting in real time.

As for customisation, Home Screen app icons and widgets in the OS can be moved in any open position. These can be tinted in a colour or configured as dark or light. A user may choose to remove names underneath for a cleaner look. The Control Center redesign brings quicker access to new groups of the most-used controls, and users can add controls from third-party apps.

Plus, a new tab bar easily floats into the app's contents and can morph inside the sidebar. For the Photos, the company emphasised collections, new carousel view and more changes. Messages gained text formatting options, redesigned Tapback (with emoji and sticker support) and message scheduling capabilities. Safari on iPadOS 18 gets Highlights and a new revamped Reader.

The browser can also compile key points from a webpage to grab the gist of a report, see location data and more. As for privacy controls, the software also gets the option to lock and hide apps. With Apple Intelligence, users can use writing tools (like rewriting, summarising, proofreading and more), image generation and editing capabilities, updates for Siri and more.

Apple highlighted its Private Cloud Compute to stress its privacy commitments for cloud processing. Siri will also gain ChatGPT access to harness its writing, image and document understanding capabilities across Apple platforms. The new Passwords app, updates for SharePlay, Freeform, Calendar, Reminders, Apple Maps, accessibility features (Eye Tracking and Vocal Shortcuts) and a dedicated Game Mode will be a part of the OS.

iPad OS 18 Availability, Compatible Devices

iPadOS 18's developer beta will be available via the Apple Developer Program from today. The public beta of the software will be released next month, and the stable build will follow in the fall of this year. Apple Intelligence beta features will debut for iPads running an M1 or later chipset.

The update will be available on "iPad Pro (M4), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later), iPad Air (M2), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad (7th generation and later), and iPad mini (5th generation and later)".
