The Indian market is inundated with entry-level TWS'. And smart accessory maker Boult added one more choice for buyers in this tide. The wearable brand launched the Y1 Pro TWS last month, which sits in the below Rs 1,000 category during the festive offers. This TWS is an upgrade to the popular Boult Y1, which has received over two lakh ratings on Flipkart and is a blue-eyed product among buyers. As a result, the Y1 Pro has big shoes to fill.

I have been testing the new TWS for around a month and have a lot to share about them. They come with a decent design and good battery life. However, I still have mixed feelings. Unlike other offerings of Boult, the company has opted for a slightly different sound signature this time. So, has this change worked in favour of the TWS? Read my full review to find out.

Design and Fit

Y1 Pro's compact capsule-shaped case is easy to carry around in the pocket. The top and bottom have a pleasing matte finish, and a textured look surrounds the rim. Boult terms it "Knurled Design," which is a nice touch. However, similar to the W50, the issue with the lid plagues the case. The cover tends to close shut unless placed on a surface due to the loose hinge.

Moving to the buds, they offer a soft silicone in-ear design and fit well in the ear canal. Even at max volume, there were no issues of sound leakage. They remain securely in place during workouts and sports activities. The black variant features the Boult branding on the grey accent of the stem. Overall, the design is good. But Boult can benefit from reevaluating the lid's quality, as we have already seen commendable construction in the Boult W40.

Boult Y1 Pro Sound Quality

As for the sound, I grilled the 10mm BoomX drivers on parameters including music, movies and gaming. Unlike the previous iterations, which emphasised bass, Boult has opted for a slightly clearheaded sound. While the thump does not overpower other frequencies, the trebles falls short compared to competitively priced products. The vocals are crisp and loud. However, the clarity of musical instruments needs improvement.

In instrument-heavy songs, they sometimes feel suppressed. Plus, they struggle with richness in movie dialogues and ambient sounds. As for calling, the experience is good indoors. In outdoor and noisy environments, the Zen ENC mics assist to an extent. Considering the price, the calling experience is satisfactory. In conclusion, while they offer decent sound for the price, there is still room for improvement due to the cut-throat competition.

Gaming and Latency

After long music sessions, tap four times on the touch controls and the TWS are all set for gaming. Boult promises 45ms low latency with the buds. Be it gunshots in Call of Duty: Mobile Season 9 or activating nitro in Asphalt 9: Legends, they sail through these challenges undeterred. Even in music mode, they offer negligible delay in lipsync. You will not notice it unless you pay your 101 per cent attention.

Controls And Connectivity

Boult's Blink and Pair, along with Bluetooth 5.3, ensures a user faces no issues with pairing or range on the Y1 Pro. Be an iPhone or Android handset, they offer fast connectivity with the paired device. As for the touch sensors, from triggering Google Assistant to changing tracks, the controls on the IPX5-rated buds adhere well to your fingertips.

Battery Life

Boult claims a battery of up to eight hours on a single charge on the buds. During my testing, I churned around 6.5 hours of battery life with the volume set to 85-90 per cent. Plus, with moderate to light usage, I was able to go for eight days before charging the earbuds again. Overall, the battery life is good for the price.

Should You Buy Boult Y1 Pro Earbuds?

Priced at Rs 999, the TWS comes in three colour options: Red, Blue and Black. It is a negotiable deal if you can grab them at this price. However, if the cost steeps to around Rs 1,200-1,400, safely skip them. Considering that price, the sound and build quality are two segments where the buds need refinements. While I have tried several products of Boult in the past with good sound in the budget range, the Y1 Pro might struggle to substitute the Boult Y1's reign.
