OpenAI has taken a major step toward making natural, hands-free AI interaction more seamless by bringing Voice mode directly into the main ChatGPT interface. Until now, using voice with ChatGPT meant switching to a separate screen—an experience many found useful but slightly inconvenient when multitasking across text, visuals, and follow-up queries. With the latest update, that fragmentation disappears.

Voice Mode Now Lives in the Main Chat

The company has confirmed that the integrated voice experience is rolling out to all users. All it requires is updating the ChatGPT app, after which both smartphone and web users will be able to access the feature instantly in their regular chat window. The biggest shift is simple but impactful: you no longer need to jump to a dedicated voice page to speak to ChatGPT. Earlier, users had to leave the main chat and enter an isolated voice interface with only basic tools like response playback or mute toggles. That separation often broke the continuity of what should have been a fluid, natural conversation.

A More Unified Experience

With the new interface, voice, text, and visuals coexist in one uninterrupted thread. You can speak your query, watch the response appear live, and simultaneously interact with images or maps—all within the same window.

As OpenAI wrote, X: “You can talk, watch answers appear, review earlier messages and see visuals like images or maps in real time.”

This integration is especially useful for people who mix voice prompts with on-screen details—whether it’s checking a route, reviewing a code snippet, or asking the model to analyse an image without switching modes.

Old Mode Still Available

For users who prefer the previous format, OpenAI has added a simple toggle. By going to Settings → Voice Mode and enabling "Separate mode", the classic standalone voice interface comes back, offering the same voice-only environment without the blended view.
