Elon Musk, head of Tesla and the owner of the social media site X, stated on Monday that he believes California should enact legislation pertaining to artificial intelligence (AI) that would force tech firms and AI developers to test some of their own models for safety.
Musk called on the state to approve the SB 1047 bill in a post on X, saying, "For over 20 years, I have been an advocate for AI regulation, just as we regulate any product/technology that is a potential risk to the public."
According to the state's legislative database, California state lawmakers attempted to introduce 65 bills pertaining to AI this legislative season. These bills included provisions to guarantee that all algorithmic decisions are impartially proven and to safeguard the intellectual property of departed individuals from being exploited by AI companies. Numerous bills have already expired.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI earlier in the day expressed support for AB 3211, a California AI law that would force internet companies to mark AI-generated content. This content can range from deepfakes intended to spread false information about political candidates to innocent jokes.
Experts are worried about the role artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content may play in a third of the world's countries that will be holding polls this year. AI-generated content has already been significant in several elections, such as the one in Indonesia.
The AI-generated labels have become one of the major concerns, specifically amid the US elections. Not only that, many countries are working on regulating AI usage and may come up with a set of rules for the organisations.
