Elon Musk xAI's Big Brain: Elon Musk's xAI introduced its latest artificial intelligence model, Grok-3, on Tuesday, boasting that the new system has "more than 10 times" the computing power of its predecessor. According to xAI, Grok-3 outperforms OpenAI's GPT-4, Google's Gemini, and DeepSeek's V3 models based on early tests, and now offers "advanced reasoning" capabilities.
These reasoning models are specifically designed to tackle more complex queries by breaking them down into smaller tasks and even fact-checking themselves before providing an answer. The goal is to deliver more accurate and comprehensive responses. Other companies, such as OpenAI with its o1 model, DeepSeek's R1, and Google's Gemini Flash Thinking, have also developed similar reasoning models.
Grok-3 offers two distinct reasoning modes: “Think,” which allows users to see Grok’s reasoning process as it works through requests, and “Big Brain,” which is intended for highly complex tasks that require greater computational power. Additionally, xAI is introducing a new AI product called Deep Search, described as a “next generation search engine.”
Musk has emphasized that Grok-3 is a "maximally truth-seeking AI — even if that truth is sometimes at odds with what is politically correct." This comes after previous versions of the Grok chatbot faced criticism for spreading misinformation, particularly during elections, and for generating controversial or offensive imagery due to fewer safety restrictions. In response, OpenAI has been exploring how to develop models that seek truth on sensitive topics while ensuring safety guidelines are maintained.
The new reasoning features are available exclusively to X Premium Plus subscribers, priced at $40 per month, marking the second price increase for the service in just two months. xAI also introduced a new subscription tier called SuperGrok, offering “the most advanced capabilities and earliest access to new features.” This plan will cost $30 per month, though it’s unclear whether this is in addition to the X subscription.
In future updates, Musk revealed that Grok will also gain a synthesized voice feature, similar to OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT. xAI is also planning to release Grok-2 as open source in the coming months.
