Elon Musk’s xAI has once again pushed the limits of artificial intelligence with Grok 3, an AI model that some are calling the “smartest AI on Earth.” Launched in February 2025, it’s already making waves among developers, AI enthusiasts, and everyday users alike.
With cutting-edge reasoning abilities, real-time web search, and a focus on truth-seeking, Grok 3 is stepping up as a major competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and DeepSeek’s R1. Here’s a deep dive into what makes Grok 3 special and the latest updates as of March 28, 2025.
A Major Step Up From Grok 2
Grok 3 is a massive upgrade over its predecessor. xAI has supercharged it with 10 to 15 times more computing power, thanks to its Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, which runs on 200,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. This makes Grok 3 highly capable in reasoning, mathematics, coding, and general knowledge.
Early testing suggests it’s outperforming top-tier models like GPT-4o, Claude 3.5, and DeepSeek V3 in key areas. In particular, its step-by-step approach to complex problem-solving is setting it apart as a true “big brain” AI.

One of the standout features is DeepSearch, a next-gen tool that allows Grok 3 to scan the web and posts on X in real time, delivering up-to-the-minute insights. Unlike most AI models that rely only on pre-trained data, DeepSearch ensures Grok 3 stays relevant and informed—making it a powerful tool for research, news analysis, and fact-checking.
Additionally, Grok 3 introduces Think Mode, which breaks down complex problems into manageable steps, offering a transparent view of its thought process. Whether it’s solving math equations or tackling scientific queries, this feature brings a whole new level of clarity to AI-generated responses.
New Features: Voice Mode and Free Access
In March 2025, xAI rolled out some exciting updates, with the most talked-about being Voice Mode. This long-awaited feature, initially teased during the launch, is now available to X Premium+ and SuperGrok subscribers. It enables real-time, spoken conversations with Grok 3, complete with voice synthesis, transcription, and sharable transcripts.
The response from users has been overwhelmingly positive, with many calling it a game-changer for hands-free AI interaction.
Another big shift? Grok 3 is now free for all X users. Initially, access was limited to X Premium+ subscribers ($40/month after a price increase), but by late February 2025, xAI opened it up to everyone. However, premium subscribers still get perks like increased usage limits and early access to experimental features.
For businesses and developers, an API for Grok 3 is on the way. xAI has confirmed that it will include both the standard and reasoning models, as well as DeepSearch, allowing third-party apps to integrate Grok’s capabilities.
Challenges and Controversies
Despite its advancements, Grok 3 isn’t perfect. Some users have reported occasional hallucinations (inaccurate responses), though xAI has been refining its self-correction mechanisms to minimize these errors.
One of the more controversial aspects of Grok 3 is its use of real-time X data. While this helps it stay up to date, some worry about potential biases that could creep in from the platform.
There was also a brief but bizarre controversy in February 2025, when Grok 3 temporarily refused to answer questions about Musk and Donald Trump, followed by a glitch where it mistakenly suggested they deserved the death penalty. xAI quickly patched the issue, blaming it on a rogue employee and a coding error. Incidents like these highlight the difficulties in balancing free speech with responsible AI behavior.
What Sets Grok 3 Apart?
Beyond raw power, Grok 3 is built with a unique philosophy. Musk has repeatedly emphasized its "maximally truth-seeking" nature, aiming to cut through politically correct narratives and provide unfiltered answers.
Earlier versions of Grok leaned slightly left due to their training on publicly available web data, but xAI says Grok 3 has been refined to be more politically neutral. Its training now includes court filings and real-time X data, making it particularly strong in legal and current-events queries.
Grok 3 is also multimodal, meaning it can analyze text, images, PDFs, and other uploaded files. There’s even speculation about text-to-video generation coming in the near future, though that remains unconfirmed.
What’s Next for Grok 3?
Looking ahead, xAI has big plans for Grok 3. Musk has hinted that Grok 2 will be open-sourced once Grok 3 stabilizes, potentially within the next few months. Future updates could bring:
-Emotional intelligence improvements for more nuanced conversations
-Tighter integration with autonomous systems
-Even stronger reasoning models to compete with OpenAI’s upcoming GPT-5
Since its launch, Grok 3 has driven record-breaking usage spikes. Mobile app downloads have surged 10x, and daily web visits have jumped from 627,000 to 4.5 million.
But can it maintain this momentum against heavyweight competitors like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude? Time will tell—but one thing is clear: Grok 3 is pushing AI into bold new territory.
