Elon Musk confirmed the release of a new feature that will hide all likes by default for X users. X is introducing "private likes" that will appear on users' timelines starting Wednesday. The platform will hide users' likes by default, allowing them to "like content without worrying about who might see it".

As per Elon Musk’s reposted tweet, some users will still be able to see the posts that they have liked but others will not. Further, the metrics including the ‘Like Count’ for your own posts will still show up under notifications. Additionally, the users will no longer be able to see who liked someone else’s post but the author will be able to see who liked its posts.

Musk stated that it's critical to "allow people to like posts without facing backlash". X's director of engineering, Haofei Wang, stated last month that the impending modification is intended to safeguard users' image.

"Yes, we are keeping our likes secret. "The incorrect behaviour is being encouraged by public likes," he had written on X. For instance, a lot of people are deterred from enjoying potentially "edgy" content out of concern for troll retaliation or to maintain their reputation.

"You won't have to worry about who sees it anytime soon. Additionally, a reminder that your 'For you' algorithm will improve the more posts you like," Wang had stated. The social media platform states that there is visibility between you and the author. "Only the author will receive notification. Bookmark is private to you alone. We might even allow users to customise it," Wang said.
