JE Technology Desk: Apple recently unveiled the first public beta of iOS 17, and the company has been laying emphasis on web apps since iOS 16.4. From opening access to push notifications to allowing third-party apps to insert shortcuts on the Home Screen of an iPhone or an iPad, the OS is allowing developers a free hand to customise their apps. In the latest move, Google Chrome, a popular internet browser, added functionality that will allow iOS and iPadOS users to bring their frequently used web portals to their device's Home Screen, reports 9To5Mac.
As shared by Threads user Chris Messina, the inventor of hashtags, the latest Google Chrome update on iOS allows a user to add URLs and web apps on the home screen. This would cut down on the effort to open Apple's Safari for quick access like the old scheme.

"You can now add URLs or Progressive Web Apps to your home screen," reads the release note of Chrome version: 115.0.5790.84 which is 157MB in size. Here is how you can add your favourite website/web app on the lock screen.
Step 1: Open a web page on your Chrome browser
Step 2: Tap on the "Share" icon
Step 3: Find "Add to Home Screen" and tap on it and you are done
The feature works on iOS devices running version 16.4 or above. Once the web app is added to the lock screen, it behaves like a regular app package and sends push notifications.

Other than this, the option to translate selective text via Google Translate is possible in the latest build. A user can simply select and long-press the text and opt for the "Google Translate" option. Additionally, users can now search the web using the Google Lens icon (via Camera permission) placed in the keyboard.
Back to web apps, Apple is also testing enhanced web apps functionality in Safari on the beta version of macOS Sonoma that will release later this year.
