Google Drive, a popular cloud storage service, is among the preferred choice of Google account holders to store files on the Internet. However, some users reported the unexpected disappearance of files from the platform recently. Turns out this may be true as the tech giant acknowledged the issue and shared that it is investigating the matter.
The problem is reportedly plaguing the Desktop app on which media uploaded or created since May 2023 stands missing for some users. According to a report from FoneArena, a user said that the account has reverted to the May 2023 state with no media in the trash and no activity history. Recovery methods suggested by customer support did not work in the South Korean user's case.
Other accounts on the support forum also echoed on a similar note. The missing files date back over two years in some cases. The search leader said it is investigating these reports discovered in the Drive for desktop version "84.0.0.0 - 84.0.4.0". The Sync Issue is "impacting a limited subset of Drive for desktop users and will follow up with more updates."

Until the problem is resolved, Google suggests that users should "not click 'Disconnect account' within Drive for desktop" and "not delete or move the app data" from the 'DriveFS' directory. The path is '%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\DriveFS' on Windows and '~/Library/Application Support/Google/DriveFS' on macOS. Secondly, users can back up their data to an external drive if they have the available space.

The problem can be a bigger issue for desktop users who use a business profile with additional Drive storage. While a fix is not available at the time of filing, a resolution for the issue is expected in the coming weeks. Till then, you must follow the above guidelines. On a related note, a storage bug affecting Pixel users was fixed by the tech giant recently. The problem affected multiple profile users on old Pixel phones. You can read more on this here.
