Gmail is getting a retail experience upgrade with the addition of a shopping feature inside the app. The feature is being made available today globally on both Gmail’s web and mobile applications, in time for the busy holiday shopping season.
One Tab for All Orders
Purchases tab automatically sorts out emails from popular e-commerce players such as Amazon and Flipkart among others, making it easier to see order confirmations, shipping updates and delivery details in a single view.
This new offering is an expansion of Gmail’s package-tracking feature launched in 2020, which puts real-time delivery updates at the top of their inbox. Now, in addition to packages that will arrive within 24 hours at the top of their list, users will see a single history of past and current orders—minimising inbox clutter and eliminating any rooting around through old emails.

Smarter Order Summaries
Next to the tab, Google has introduced a new purchase-related emails summary card. They show a neatly formatted summary of an order, including product information, estimated delivery range, and shipping status—without needing recipients to open the full email.
Promotions Category Gets Smarter
Google is also updating a feature in Gmail called the Promotions category, where marketing and discount emails are commonly sorted. The refreshed Promotions view introduces:
- Smarter Sorting by Relevance: Sort your emails by importance, focusing on deals from your favorite brands.
- “Nudges” for Upcoming Deals: Highlights on the timebound deals and reminders, so users don’t end up missing out on seasonal sales.
This action follows hard on Gmail’s recent AI-enhanced inbox and the overall goal is to help users not only manage their work emails but also their shopping life more efficiently.
