Google has announced plans to expand access to its Road Mapper function, allowing more volunteers to join the global effort to add missing roads to Google Maps. Since its start in 2021, contributors have mapped over 1.5 million km of road, aiding more than 200 million users by improving navigation accuracy. For those unaware, the Road Mapper is an invitation-only platform where people can pinpoint the geometrics of the roads that are not present on Google Maps currently.
"Their contributions have made a genuine difference in the lives of individuals all around the world. We're thrilled to announce that we're allowing additional contributors to help us enhance our maps," the company added.
The company has already announced that it has witnessed progress but there are still many issues to look forward to. The company also thinks that public involvement can improve the accuracy and accessibility of the mapping.
This move aims to give its users thorough and reliable geographic information. For $966 million in June 2013, Google purchased Waze, bringing its useful crowdsourced location platform and social features to Google Maps.
In June of this year, Google Maps launched Immersive View in four more locations and increased the feature's global coverage to over 500 famous sites. By offering immersive 360-degree views of well-known sites, this feature improves the user experience and makes navigation and discovery more enjoyable.
With this, Google has already announced a slew of plans at its Google IO 2023 developer event, where it has announced a variety of new features for Android users and Maps users. However, most of these features are under wrap as the tech giant has not released the Android 14 to the public yet and it is expected that the company may roll out the software update after introducing its Pixel 8 series.
