GOOGLE I/O 2023 Updates: The tech giant announced that Gmail - the email communication service, Google Maps - the navigation app, and Google Photos - the photo/video organiser will be puffed with AI by the end of this year. At the event, considerable focus was given to artificial intelligence. This can be attributed to an after-effect of the AI war initiated with the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI.

Showcasing the new functionalities, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, shared a demo of AI in action within each of these apps. Here is a breakup of features presented at the I/O developer conference.

Google I/O 2023: Demo of AI at work in Gmail presented

Help me write - The live stream gave an example of a prompt to generate an email for claiming a refund from an airline in Gmail. To frame the reply, the AI model sources details from the trailing mail.

The feature will roll out as a part of Workspace updates.

Google I/O Event: AI in Google Maps showcased

Immersive view for routes - A user can preview a bird's-eye view of the entire journey of the surroundings even before starting the trip. The functionality would showcase the expected traffic and weather updates in the 3D preview.

A user can also check AQI, weather and more. The feature will roll "over the summer" and launch in 15 cities including London, Tokyo, New York and San Francisco by the end of 2023. Pichai said that Maps provide 20 billion KMs of directions daily.

Google I/O: Magic Editor in Photos

Magic Editor can automatically add and adjust elements in photos. It can move objects/people in the frame and recolour the background using AI. It will roll out later this year enhancing the app experience for users. Additionally, Find Photos and Magic Eraser was also highlighted in the event.

"Seven years into our journey as an AI-first company, we are at an exciting inflection point. We're reimagining all of our products, including Search." Sundar Pichai said at the conference, as per The Verge.

Meanwhile, AI has been the buzzing keyword ever since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT. Tech giants including Microsoft have been swift to integrate emerging technology into their products.
